lettuce

Successes/Blessings:

  • I harvested some mesclun from the garden for a salad. (pictured above) I don’t know why, but my lettuce the last 2 years has grown slower than molasses. I’m not sure what’s up with that.
  • I used RIT to dye a cotton sleepsack and a changing pad cover that had been stained. I originally thought I’d have to buy replacements…but then this idea to just dye them a darker blue color struck me! I saved $25-$30 by doing this.
  • My husband’s manager sent home another bag of overflow produce from his garden, including summer squash, zucchini, and a few bell peppers.
  • I used some of our own compost to top dress my pepper and green bean plants.
  • We stopped at the bread outlet while grocery shopping. We got 6 loaves of whole wheat bread, 2 loaves of cinnamon raisin bread, and 4 packages of bagels for $16.
  • I’ve been leaving the central air off for the first half of the day and just turning it on around 3pm when/if the thermostat gets above 80 in the house. This is mostly to cool off bedrooms for naps and bedtime. We live in a 130 yr old farmhouse, and the upstairs (where all the bedrooms are) gets horribly stuffy.
  • I did go slightly over our $400/month grocery budget this month, but it was out of anticipation of income loss. Sometimes my husband loses days out of his schedule if work is slow. When we see this starting to happen, we try to bulk up the pantry and freezers if possible.
  • I used a Tops Bonus card to get .10 cents off each gallon of gas. I don’t shop at Tops often because their prices are usually outrageous, but we occasionally rack up points by running in for some milk or if there’s a good deal on something specific. This is the closes grocery store to our house, so occasionally we make “emergency” runs in there if we need something.
  • I’ve been enjoying watching some of Jamerrill Stewart’s YouTube videos for some frugal living/homeschooling/large family mama tips.
  • We hung curtains in our master bedroom that we bought on sale for $16 per set (2 panels in each set). This is the first time since we’ve been married that we’ve put curtains up in our room. We’ve just had mini blinds this whole time. You all know how it is…the rest of the house gets put first and mama and daddy’s bedroom gets pushed to the back. I’m trying to spruce up our room without spending any more money than what we spent on the curtains ($32 total).

  1. We ate lettuce from my straw bale garden several times, and I picked up some school supplies for my daughter at Staples. Between their weekly deals and a coupon I had, the trip cost me nothing!

    • Amy, that is awesome!! I love the back to school deals. I felt like a total frugalista queen when I went into Wal-Mart last week and bought 20 some odd spiral notebooks for under $3 lol!
